Ballet Leg-Warmers Knitting Pattern

At last! My leg warmers are finished! I first got the idea to combine two of my new interests and knit a pair of ballet leg warmers while knitting my first hat using a circular knitting needle. If you have ever knitted on the round you know that instead of moving your work back and forth from needle to needle you join your stitches, mark the beginning of your round and just knit around and around in a circle. Eventually your work forms a knitted ring or tube. When knitting a hat you eventually decrease your stitches and then eventually close off the end, forming the top.
I searched online for patterns and didn't find one that I liked enough to use, so I made one up as I went. Below is my pattern. Since this was my first run at it, it was not perfect. There are changes I will make for my next pair and I have commented on these steps.

Materials:
  • 2- 3 oz Lion Brand Yarn Wool-Ease Sport Weight Yarn. *I used the Lion Brand Wool-Ease Worsted Weight yarn in Oxford Grey. I think a sport weight yarn would have been better, but this was all I had. I used one ball per leg warmer. Ideally I would have liked them to go a little bit longer, so I will use more on the next pair. These ended up being 22" long.
  • 1- 16" No. 8 Circular needle (5.0mm)
  • No. 8 (5.0mm) double pointed needles to use when work gets too small
  • Stitch marker *I used a piece of a different colored yarn tied in a loop
Pattern:

  1. Cast on 64 stitches using circular needle*This was a little bit baggy for just above the knee, I was hoping to do more of a thigh high leg warmer when I chose this number.
  2. Join * Make sure not to twist your work at this point!
  3. K first round
  4. k1,p1 for 15 rounds (about 3")
  5. St st for 10 rounds * If you start with less then 64 stitches make up for it here by adding the needed number of rounds you will be lacking in your decrease (There's a  little math problem for you to have fun with :)
  6. St st variation for this pattern: K1, k2 together k rest of round. P rounds are normal. Do this twice. (So a total of four rounds using St st variation)
  7. St st (regular) for four rounds then St st variation for four rounds. Continue this pattern slowly decreasing until you get to 44 stitches remaining on your circular needle. *Make sure you finish whichever St st pattern you are using (regular or variation) before moving on to your next step, so you finish with a p round.
  8. St st 20 rounds * If you are wanting to increase the length of your leg warmer add 10 more rounds of St st at this point.
  9. Continue as you did in step seven with St st variation for four rounds then regular St st for four rounds until there are 40 stitches remaining on your needles.
  10. St st for 25 rounds *This is where I was running out of yarn. Once again if you would like to have a longer leg warmer add 10 more rounds of St st here as well.
  11. K1, P1 for 15 rounds
  12. Bind off. * Be conscious of how tightly you bind off. If you want more stretch bind off more loosely.

Afterthoughts:

I think I will try another set with maybe a pretty ballet pink yarn (I know I know it will get dirty but they will be so cute) making adjustments when needed so they can be as long as I wanted them to be.

Without tights these slip down my leg pretty quickly because of the 64 stitch band. Next time I will adjust that! With tights they are fine.
